The Shadow and the Flame: A Poem of Secret Love

I dwell within the shade to drink your light,
You, the cold star of my tormented night;
To you I offer, in a prayer unseen,
The painful treasure of what might have been.

Whene’er your careless glance sweeps o’er my face,
A sudden tremor shakes my spirit’s base;
I tremble lest you see, through my disguise,
The burning tumult hidden in my eyes.

Alas! I stifle down the tempest’s cry,
The wild I love you born to swiftly die;
A shy adorer, bowing down my head,
For fear one word might leave my hope for dead.

Yet know, inside the dark where dreams are spun,
I wait the hour our two souls merge as one;
To break the silence, banish all my fear,
And speak the truth that you are held so dear.

Unspoken affection is perhaps the most poignant form of romance. This piece captures the exquisite agony of holding a universe of emotion inside, reflecting the timeless struggle between the fear of rejection and the desire for connection.
