The Pyre of Sweetest Sins

Upon the velvet dark, a candle gleams,
But pales beside the fire within your eyes;
Your touch awakes the pulse of fevered dreams,
Wherein the dormant soul of passion lies.

No mortal cold can quell this sudden heat,
That turns the very air to trembling gold;
Two kindred flames in conflagration meet,
A story of the flesh, in whispers told.

Your breath upon my skin, a searing brand,
Ignites the timber of my secret heart;
We wander through a bright and burning land,
Where neither time nor tide can tear apart.

Let ashes fall where lesser lovers tread,
We are the phoenix rising from the pyre;
By furious desire and hunger fed,
Consumed within the beauty of the fire.

This piece draws heavily upon the Romantic tradition, where physical sensation is the gateway to the sublime. It suggests that true passion is a transformative force, one that burns away the trivialities of the world to leave only the essential truth of connection.
